Are You Overlooking Returners? Why Ex-Engineers Are a Hidden Gem in Today’s Labour Market

Are You Overlooking Returners? Why Ex-Engineers Are a Hidden Gem in Today’s Labour Market

In the race to fill roles, many employers are focused on bringing in fresh talent. But there’s a growing group of highly skilled professionals that often gets left behind: returners.

Returners are former engineers, technicians, and skilled workers who have stepped away from the workforce - sometimes due to family commitments, health issues, redundancy, or early retirement. Many of them are ready to come back.

What they need isn’t another job ad. They need an invitation.

We’ve worked with companies who have re-engaged returners and seen incredible results. These professionals bring experience, stability, and a problem-solving mindset that’s hard to teach. In many cases, they outperform newer hires in both productivity and mentoring ability.

So why are they overlooked? Because many businesses still see gaps on a resume as a red flag, not a conversation starter. Others assume returners won’t want to re-train or adapt.

The truth is, many of them do - if the return is structured well:

  • Flexible or part-time hours to ease back in
  • Phased returns that build confidence
  • Support with re-certification
  • Mentorship or coaching to update systems knowledge

We recently placed a Quality Engineer who’d been out of the trade for five years. Within a month, he was fully up to speed and training apprentices. All he needed was the opportunity.

Returners aren’t a fallback option. They’re a high-value, low-risk solution hiding in plain sight.

If you’re struggling to fill roles, maybe it’s time to look backward - and invite someone forward.
