STEM Outreach: Is It Working?

Real progress has been made in recent years in STEM outreach efforts, but significant work remains. STEM skills are the bedrock for sectors crucial to the great US economy, with engineering being a prime example.

Is STEM Outreach Currently Working?

In 2022, the National Science Foundation’s Science and Engineering report sounded an alarm, revealing that the United States is falling behind in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). According to the foundation, the U.S. no longer leads in producing science and engineering research publications, patents, or natural-science Ph.D. graduates; China has taken the lead in all these areas. With trends indicating that the gap is unlikely to close anytime soon.

The root of the problem isn't a lack of universities to train future scientists or an economy incapable of fostering innovation. Instead, the issue starts much earlier in the supply chain, in our elementary and secondary schools.

In 2019, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the Nation’s Report Card, highlighted that American students are struggling in the sciences. Over a quarter of fourth graders scored below basic levels in science, and by 12th grade, this proportion grows to over 40%. A similar pattern is evident in NAEP math scores. The 2022 NAEP test scores for math show declining performance and an increasing percentage of students below basic proficiency. These patterns are particularly troubling among Black and Hispanic students, who are disproportionately represented in the below-basic category for both science and math.

So, is STEM outreach working in the U.S.? The data suggests not. The persistent struggles of students, particularly in early education, indicate that current STEM outreach efforts may not be sufficiently effective. The education workforce pipeline foundation is on thin ice, making it more important than ever not to take any progress for granted and to continue prioritizing the development of a robust talent pipeline.

  • About wearing hard hats, holding wrenches, or solving math problems with computers.
  • Reserved for white men with degrees, limited by gender, ethnicity, or specific levels of ability.
  • A solo gig; it thrives in diverse, collaborative teams.
  • Confined to fancy offices or big factories.

Instead, engineering is:

  • About spotting problems, understanding their impact, and working to solve them.
  • Fueled by curiosity, exploring possibilities, and embracing the trial-and-error process.
  • Recognizing that even solving the least complex of tasks is a win.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusivity
STEM education fosters diversity and inclusivity within the engineering sector. By involving students from various backgrounds and underrepresented groups, we ensure that the engineering workforce mirrors the diverse fabric of our society.
